The Kennedy half dollar was first struck by the US Mint in 1964. This design is still used today, although there are few half dollars in circulation. The Kennedy design was created to honor John F. Kennedy, our 35th president, after his assassination in 1963. Even today, John F. Kennedy is one of the most recognized faces of United States history. 90% Silver Struck in 1964. These 90% silver Kennedy half dollars were minted in 1964, their first year of issue. This was the last year that 90% silver coinage was struck for circulation in the United States. Each roll of these halves contains over 7 Troy oz. The quality of the coins in this roll ranges from Extra Fine to About Uncirculated. This is the same number of half dollars contained in a roll from the bank. Kennedy Half Dollar Roll Packaging. To preserve and protect these halves as much as possible, they are packaged in a snug fitting plastic tube. While these plastic tubes are not impervious, they provide a much greater level of protection than paper rolls while still allowing easy access to the coins. The transparent tubes also allow the contents to be seen easily without removing them from the container. The 1964 Kennedy half features an intricate depiction of John F. Kennedy on the obverse. Coins with less wear will display the fine details of President Kennedy&###x2019;s hair, as well as his ear and facial features. The front of these fifty cent pieces are inscribed with the words LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and 1964. The reverse side of these coins display a design based on the presidential seal. At the center of the design is a bald eagle with a shield. The eagle has each of its limbs outstretched and holds a bundle of arrows with one foot and an olive branch with the other. Coins that have a low degree of wear will display fine details on the shield and the feathers of the eagle. Above the eagle&###x2019;s head is a banner which reads E PLURIBUS UNUM. Next to the eagle&###x2019;s head and above the banner is a collection of 13 stars. Surrounding the eagle is a complete circle made of 50 stars.
