The coin first appeared with the Kennedy design in 1964 and featured 90% silver content at the time. With rising prices for silver and people hoarding the original 1964 Kennedy Half Dollars as mementos of the fallen president, changes were made to the silver content. By this time, all US coins had been adjusted away from 90% and 40% silver content with the exception of the Kennedy half dollars.
